Christopher Brasel, also known as Chris, brings his U.S. Navy background back to UNC Charlotte. For the last several months, he has assumed the role of Director of the Veteran Services Office, bringing a wide variety of experience to the position and our campus.

In his daily life, shaped by a military background transitioning into civilian life, an enduring commitment to discipline and routine is embodied by Chris. Despite no longer preparing for military duties, the ingrained habit of an early riser persists. These qualities contributed to shaping his career path, particularly in Student Affairs, where individuals with a balance of military and civilian backgrounds are commonly absent.

Reflected on his transition and challenges faced by Chris, who had previously served in the military and taught in the Green Zone—a designated safe space recognized by veterans. The contrast in organizational structures between the military and Student Affairs was noted by him. It maintains a sense of structure and familiarity, operated on a schedule that dictates daily activities, though not as strictly. The diverse nature of Chris's experiences navigated between the known and the unpredictable in the realm of routine and crisis response.

Drawing from his military service, leadership, and teamwork skills honed as a noncommissioned officer overseeing a team of 20 are leveraged by Chris. This experience helped him manage diverse personalities and maintain order, which fostered adaptability and agility in leadership. He navigated career choices, with or without a military background, and offered a unique perspective on the military: immersing individuals in leadership responsibilities early on.

The transition into Student Affairs was unexpected. Beginning as a student, he worked in the office, and the circumstances led him to the role of an admin assistant. This opportunity to assist fellow student veterans emerged from a desire to improve upon a personally challenging military-to-civilian transition.

The impact of the military on fostering camaraderie and its subsequent influence on teamwork and collaboration is delved into by Chris. The unique bond among veterans is recognized, and efforts are made at UNC Charlotte to create an inclusive environment, celebrated through events like the veteran breakfast and the camo classic, reinforcing a sense of belonging among staff, faculty, and students.

Advice to students in a similar position, offered by Chris, encouraged them to utilize the benefits and resources available to veterans. Exploring educational opportunities, vocational training, and various support services provided by the VA– Veterans Affairs– is advocated for. Emphasizing the importance of networking with veteran service organizations and tapping into available resources, Chris aims to help students with a smoother transition into civilian life for his fellow veterans.
